Audiovisual

Short and feature-length footage, video clips, publicity and audiovisual films for TV – the quality of materials being produced in Brazil has been increasing year by year, as well as the participation of the country in festivals and international competitions.

Invented in 1895 by the Lumière brothers, cinema showed itself to be fundamental for the collective imagination in the twentieth century, both as a source of entertainment and cultural divulgation. In Brazil, the art form arrived through the Italian immigrant Affonso Segretto, who filmed the first images of the port of Rio de Janeiro in 1898.

From that moment on, an entertainment market began to arise around the then federal capital at the start of the twentieth century. Hundreds of small films were produced and shown for rapidly growing urban audiences, who demanded leisure and amusement.

The development of audiovisual production led, around half a century later, to the inauguration of the first television channel in Brazil. TV Tupi went on air 18 September 1950, founded by the journalist Assis Chateaubriand, in São Paulo. With almost 60 years of broadcasting, Brazilian television represents not only one of the principal vehicles for communication, but also an important instrument for Brazilian culture.

Currently, Digital TV and the Internet are helping to democratize both the access to works, and the means of audiovisual production. The obstacle to overcome for managers in the cultural area is to stimulate independent and regional audiovisual production in different languages and formats.
